We denounce the murderous attack against the Palestinian people

Wednesday, May 16, 2018

The Cyprus Peace Council (CPC) denounces Israel’s murderous attack on the Palestinian people, resulting in more than fifty dead and hundreds of injured Palestinians who were demonstrating for their return to the Palestinian territories occupied by the State of Israel. All these atrocities in Gaza were being committed as the state of Israel was celebrating its 70th anniversary since its establishment and at the same time as celebrations were ongoing for the opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem, recognizing it as the capital of Israel. The situation in Gaza is a continuation of the Israeli state's aggressive policy against the Palestinians of Gaza, who are living in an open prison on their own land.
We condemn the US decision and the tolerance shown by most of the EU states towards the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which is in violation of International Law and the resolutions of the UN. Moreover, the US decision makes the achievement of a peaceful solution to the Palestinian problem even more difficult. The CPC strongly supports the legitimate demand of the Palestinian people for the establishment of an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital.
The CPC supports the progressive forces that are struggling against the occupation and warmongering policies of the state of Israel, for a just and peaceful solution of the Palestinian problem to the benefit of both peoples.
The decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, the withdrawal of the US from the agreement on Iran's nuclear program, and the declarations made by the President of Israel about Iran and Hezbollah, are unleashing the imperialist-warmongering circles in Israel and indicate the next war to be waged, which will be against the people of Iran.
We call on the Cypriot government to distance itself from concluding any military agreements with the slaughterer of the Palestinian people and furthermore to demand that the British bases won’t be used again against the peoples of the region.

Finally, we call on all peace-loving people to participate in the demonstration being organized in solidarity with the Palestinian people this Wednesday 16 May 2018 at 18:00 p.m. outside the Israeli Embassy in Nicosia, as well as in the Pancyprian March for Peace that will take place on Sunday 10 June 2018 at the British bases in Akrotiri.
