Marking the 49th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) on February 27, 1976, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) congratulates the Sahrawi people, as well as the Polisario Front, their legitimate representative, and reaffirms its solidarity with their struggle for respect and realization of their right to self-determination.

Western Sahara is considered, in light of international law and United Nations resolutions (primarily United Nations General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) of 1960), a territory to be decolonized. Since 1975, Morocco has illegally occupied territories in Western Sahara, repressing the Sahrawi population and illegally exploiting its natural resources. In addition to the Sahrawi population living in the occupied territories, another part of the population has been in refugee camps located in Algeria for decades.

The CPPC advocates that the Portuguese authorities, in accordance with article 7 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, fight clearly, firmly and actively for the respect and realization of the national rights of the Sahrawi people, including the right to self-determination.

Likewise, the CPPC calls for public demand for an end to the repression against the Sahrawi population in the illegally occupied territories and for the release of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan prisons. The holding of the referendum promised by the UN over 30 years ago, which will allow the Sahrawi people to freely exercise their legitimate and inalienable right to self-determination, is a requirement around which defenders of peace and peoples' rights must converge.

Today, February 27, 40 Portuguese organizations sent an open letter to the Prime Minister, in which they consider that the Portuguese Government must, among other aspects, fight immediately and actively to promote effective steps aimed at holding the self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people, as determined by UN resolutions.

Dar mais força à solidariedade com o Sara Ocidental

Assinalando o 49.º aniversário da proclamação da República Árabe Sarauí Democrática (RASD), a 27 de Fevereiro de 1976, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) felicita o povo sarauí, assim como a Frente Polisário, sua legítima representante, e reafirma a sua solidariedade para com a sua luta em prol do respeito e da concretização do seu direito à autodeterminação.

O Sara Ocidental é considerado, à luz do direito internacional e das resoluções da Organização das Nações Unidas (desde logo a resolução 1514 (XV), da Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas, de 1960), um território por descolonizar. Desde 1975 que Marrocos ocupa ilegalmente territórios do Sara Ocidental, reprimindo a população sarauí e explorando ilegalmente os seus recursos naturais. Para além da população sarauí que vive nos territórios sob ocupação, outra parte da população encontra-se desde há décadas em campos de refugiados, localizados na Argélia.

O CPPC defende que as autoridades portuguesas, em consonância com o artigo 7.º da Constituição da República Portuguesa, se batam de forma clara, firme e ativa em prol do respeito e da concretização dos direitos nacionais do povo sarauí, incluindo o direito à autodeterminação.
Do mesmo modo, o CPPC apela à exigência pública do fim da repressão contra a população sarauí nos territórios ilegalmente ocupados e da libertação dos presos políticos sarauís detidos nas prisões marroquinas.

A realização do referendo prometido há mais de 30 anos pela ONU, que permita ao povo sarauí exercer livremente o seu legitimo e inalienável direito à autodeterminação, constitui uma exigência em torno da qual devem convergir os defensores da paz e dos direitos dos povos.

Hoje, dia 27 de Fevereiro, 40 organizações portuguesas enviaram uma carta-aberta ao primeiro-ministro, onde consideram que o Governo português deve, entre outros aspectos, pugnar imediata e ativamente para que sejam promovidos passos efetivos visando a realização do referendo de autodeterminação do povo sarauí, como determinam as resoluções da ONU.
