Greetings to the Sahrawi people and the Polisario Front - on the 47th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

Monday, April 10, 2023

On the occasion of the 47th. anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is celebrated today, February 27, 2023, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) salutes the Sahrawi people and their legitimate representative, the Polisario Front, and reaffirms solidarity with their struggle for the fulfilment of their right to self-determination.

Today, the CPPC marked this particularly important date for the Sahrawi people on the street. In Coimbra, the branch of CPPC activists placed banners around the city with the message “Free Sahara”.

Tomorrow, February 28, at Clube Estefânia, in Lisbon, the CPPC will mark this date by holding a film session and debate on Western Sahara, with the presence of Omar Mih, representative of the Polisario Front in Portugal.

Since 1960, Western Sahara has been considered, by the General Assembly of the United Nations, a territory to be decolonised, being, at that date, under the administration of the Kingdom of Spain.

In 1966, a UN resolution called for a referendum to enable the Sahrawi people to freely exercise their right to self-determination. This resolution was ignored by the administering power, Spain, which in 1975 decided to hand over the administration of the territory of Western Sahara to the Kingdom of Morocco. Since that year most of the territory of Western Sahara has been occupied by Morocco and a large part of the Sahrawi people have been forced to flee and seek refuge in neighbouring Algeria.

Since 1975, Morocco has maintained its policy of occupation, exercising violent repression against the Sahrawi population living in the occupied territories and also attacking non-occupied areas, while continuing to plunder Western Sahara's natural resources for the benefit of Moroccan companies and of other countries, with the connivance of the European Union, which tries to ignore the decisions of the European Court of Justice, which considers that these resources belong to the Sahrawi people and cannot be used without their consent.

Since 2020, after Morocco violated the ceasefire signed in 1991, attacks and repression against the Sahrawi population have escalated.

Since 1991, the Sahrawi people have been waiting for the completion of the decolonisation process by holding a referendum, under the auspices of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

The CPPC strongly repudiates the illegal occupation of Western Sahara territories by the Kingdom of Morocco; reaffirms that the Sahrawi people have the legitimate right to decide their present and future and, if they so choose, to establish their own free, independent and sovereign state; urges the Portuguese Government to make the necessary efforts to help the Sahrawi people exercise their right to self-determination; calls for solidarity with the national cause of the Sahrawi people.
