The colonization policy in occupied Palestinian territories is a war crime and constitutes a violation of international law

Thursday, November 21, 2019

Once again, the US government has shown that it is willing to annul even international law in order to support of the violations and crimes committed by the guardian of Imperialist interests, namely Israel. This time through the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, it is covering up the war crime which is being committed in the occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank, provocatively characterizing Israeli settlements as lawful.

The US government doesn’t hesitate to deny even itself as it has changed the position it has upheld on this issue since 1978. Its action is not accidental. It represents a continuation of the US effort to exonerate Israel's violations and crimes by imposing its "sovereignty" on the Palestinian people and the peoples of the region. We recall that it was preceded by the provocative US decision to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem by recognizing it as the capital of Israel, as well as the recognition of Israeli “sovereignty” over the occupied Syrian territories at the Golan Heights and the non-recognition of the Palestinians as refugees, and in doing so abolishing the right of return of the refugees.

The Cyprus Peace Council denounces the new provocative action of the US government against the Palestinian people. We remain unwaveringly in solidarity with the heroic people of Palestine. We strongly support the just demand of the Palestinian people for the establishment of an independent state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital and the return of all refugees to their occupied territories, as recorded in UN resolutions.

The US provocative action to recognize the Israeli settlements as lawful may also have negative ramifications on the Cyprus problem too. That’s why we urge the Anastasiades government to make use of Foreign Minister N. Christodoulides’ presence in the United States to denounce the US Secretary of State’s provocative statements and stand on the side o9f the Palestinian people based on the UN resolutions and of international law.

Finally, we call on all friends of Palestine to express their solidarity by participating in the inauguration of the “Park of Palestine”, organized by the Kiti Community Council, the Embassy of the State of Palestine, the Cyprus Peace Council and the Organisations of the mass movement of the Left in Kiti on Sunday, 24th November at 11:00 a.m. in the green area, Karpenisiou Street (Kiti-Mazotos Road) at Kiti.
