The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) repudiates the recent and continuous bombings by the US and the United Kingdom against Yemen, which not only worsen the conditions of the already martyred Yemeni people, but also represent a new and dangerous step in the escalation of war in the Middle East.

However much the US tries to disguise it, this aggression constitutes retaliation for attacks by Yemeni forces against the movement of ships associated with Israeli interests in the Red Sea, as a form of pressure for Israeli forces to stop the massacre they are carrying out. against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and for Israel to respect and comply with international law, particularly UN resolutions on the issue of Palestine.

This not being an act of "defence of international trade", as the US and its allies seek to justify their bombings against Yemen – particularly using large media networks –, in fact they represent an unequivocal act in defence of the policy of occupation and colonisation carried out by Israel and complicity with its crimes.

The US and UK attacks on Yemen follow a decade of war in that country, which according to the Red Cross and the United Nations was, until the recent aggression on Gaza, the "biggest humanitarian crisis in the world". In all these years of war, Saudi Arabia assumed itself as a proxy for North American and British interests in that region, those same ones that now directly assume responsibility for the attacks.

The CPPC condemns Portugal's participation in this aggression carried out by the US and its allies - which the European Union now joins -, announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, stressing that it does not serve the interests of peace, the Portuguese people and of the Middle East, and which is contrary to the principles of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, which in its article 7 enshrines the "peaceful solution of international conflicts".

It is urgent that the Portuguese Government, instead of contributing to the worsening of the situation, contributes to immediately end the aggression against Yemen and join the field of those who, around the world, demand peace in the Middle East and the fulfilment of the rights of the Palestinian people to their sovereign, independent and viable State, on the borders prior to June 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem and ensuring the right to return of refugees, as enshrined in several United Nations resolutions.

Parar a agressão ao Iémen!
Travar a escalada de guerra!
Paz e liberdade na Palestina!

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) repudia os recentes e contínuos bombardeamentos dos EUA e do Reino Unido contra o Iémen, que não só agravam as condições do já tão martirizado povo iemenita, como representam um novo e perigoso passo na escalada de guerra no Médio Oriente.
Por mais que os EUA o procurem escamotear, esta agressão constitui uma retaliação face aos ataques de forças iemenitas contra a circulação de navios associados aos interesses de Israel no Mar Vermelho, como forma de pressão para que as forças israelitas parem o massacre que levam a cabo contra o povo palestiniano na Faixa de Gaza e para que Israel respeite e cumpra o direito internacional, nomeadamente as resoluções da ONU quanto à questão da Palestina.
Não se tratando de um ato de "defesa do comércio internacional", como os EUA e os seus aliados procuram justificar os seus bombardeamentos contra o Iémen – nomeadamente utilizando as grandes cadeias de comunicação social –, na verdade estes representam um inequívoco ato em defesa da política de ocupação e colonização levada a cabo por Israel e de cumplicidade com os seus crimes.
Os ataques dos EUA e do Reino Unido ao Iémen sucedem-se a uma década de guerra naquele país, que segundo a Cruz Vermelha e as Nações Unidas era, até à recente agressão a Gaza, a "maior crise humanitária do mundo". Em todos esses anos de guerra, a Arábia Saudita assumiu-se como testa-de-ponte dos interesses norte-americanos e britânicos naquela região, os mesmos que, agora, assumem diretamente a autoria dos ataques.
O CPPC condena a participação de Portugal nesta agressão levada pelos EUA e seus aliados – a que a União Europeia agora se associa –, anunciada pelo ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, salientando que a mesma não serve os interesses da paz, do povo português e dos povos do Médio Oriente, e que é contrária aos princípios da Constituição da República Portuguesa, que no seu artigo 7.º consagra a "solução pacífica dos conflitos internacionais".
É urgente que o Governo português ao invés de contribuir para o agravamento da situação, contribua para travar de imediato a agressão ao Iémen e alargar o campo daqueles que, por todo o mundo, exigem paz no Médio Oriente e o cumprimento do direito do povo palestiniano ao seu Estado soberano, independente e viável, nas fronteiras anteriores a junho de 1967, com capital em Jerusalém Oriental e assegurando o direito ao regresso dos refugiados, como consagrado em diversas resoluções das Nações Unidas.
