NATO summit – a growing threat to peace and security in Europe and the world

Wednesday, July 6, 2022

A new NATO Summit is to be held on June 29 and 30, in Madrid, taking place at a particularly serious moment, as witnessed by the situation that is currently being experienced in the Middle East, Europe, Africa or Asia.

In Europe, decades of NATO enlargement and the advancement of its military bases and troops, naval fleets, military exercises increasingly closer to the Russian Federation, are at the root of the conflict that is currently taking place and is worsening. It is urgent to reverse the course of militarism and confrontation that has long been fostered by NATO. However, given the goals and measures that it announces, the NATO Summit held in Madrid will further the warmongering path followed by this political-military bloc, reaffirming decisions adopted long ago and taking new steps in instigating an escalation of war and confrontation, on which the US is betting, now using the war in Ukraine as a pretext.

Among other serious aspects, this Summit intends to continue to promote: a significant increase in military spending by NATO members, decided in 2014, and the arms race; the militarisation of the European Union as the European pillar of NATO; the enlargement of NATO to Eastern Europe, including Sweden and Finland; the reinforcement of NATO's military means, namely in Eastern Europe; the instigation and prolongation of the war in Ukraine – guidelines and measures that show the growth in the US Administration's strategy of siege and wearing down of Russia.

While they foster the warmongering escalation and brandish the imposition of more sanctions, the US and NATO are closing any path of dialogue with a view to a negotiated solution to the conflict in Europe.
The announcement of the participation of Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea in this Summit also assumes serious significance, which aims to strengthen NATO as a political-military bloc of global scope, namely by qualitatively strengthening military partnerships with these countries in the Asia-Pacific, targeting China and Russia.

The Portuguese Government has based its position on alignment with the dangerous warmongering escalation of the US and NATO, which entails huge dangers for the peoples of Europe and the world and is contrary to the aspiration for peace of the Portuguese people.
The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) considers the dissolution of NATO an imperative to safeguard peace in Europe and in the world, for the construction of a collective security system based on the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Final Act of the Conference on European Security and Cooperation, held in Helsinki between 1973 and 1975.
In its article 7, the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, enshrines that “Portugal advocates the abolition of imperialism, colonialism and any other forms of aggression, domination and exploitation in the relations between peoples, as well as general, simultaneous and controlled disarmament, the dissolution of political-military blocs and the establishment of a system of collective security, with a view to creating an international order capable of ensuring peace and justice in relations between peoples.”

This is the path that is in the interest of peace! It is also for this that the CPPC fights and participated in the parade held in Lisbon, on June 25, as will participate in the parade that will take place tomorrow, the 29 th ., in Porto, promoted by the signatories of the Appeal Yes to Peace! No to War and to the Arms Race!
The CPPC calls on all those who truly defend peace, sovereignty and the rights of peoples to make their voices heard to uphold peace in the world!
