The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) salutes the Polisario Front, legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people, on the occasion of the 48th. anniversary of its creation, on May 10, 1973, recognising its key role in the struggle against colonialism and for the recognition of the inalienable right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination and to a free and sovereign homeland in that territory, according to the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The Polisario Front was created following the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly determining, respectively, the decolonisation of the territory (Resolution 1514, 1960) and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination (Resolution 2229, 1966). However, the colonial power at the time, Spain, not only failed to comply with those resolutions but also gave rise to the occupation of Western Sahara by the Kingdom of Morocco in 1975.

The Polisario Front organised armed resistance against the invader and on February 27, 1976 proclaimed SADR in the liberated part of its territory. Two-thirds of Western Sahara, however, remain under illegal occupation by the Kingdom of Morocco, even though it was forced by the 1991 ceasefire agreement to hold a referendum on independence.

Morocco has exerted a violent repression on the Sahrawi communities that inhabit the occupied territory and continues to plunder the natural resources of Western Sahara for the benefit of Moroccan and European companies, with the collusion of the US and the European Union, which ignore the decisions of the European Court of Justice attesting that these resources belong to the Sahrawi people and cannot be used without their consent.

Keeping faithful to its solidarity with the struggle of the Sahrawi people and the Polisario Front for the realisation of their legitimate and just aspirations, the CPPC calls for an end to the repression on the Sahrawi people and the illegal occupation of the territories of Western Sahara by the Kingdom of Morocco; respect for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination; and the release of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan jails.

The Portuguese authorities are demanded to adopt a policy that promotes the materialisation of the national rights of those people, in line with Article 7 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

CPPC saúda a Frente Polisário e a sua luta pela liberdade e soberania do povo sarauí

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) saúda a Frente Polisário, legítima representante do povo sarauí, por ocasião do 48.º aniversário da sua criação, a 10 de maio de 1973, reconhecendo o seu papel determinante na luta contra o colonialismo e pelo reconhecimento do direito inalienável do povo do Saara Ocidental à autodeterminação e a uma pátria livre e soberana nesse território, no que se inscreve a proclamação da República Árabe Sarauí Democrática (RASD) em 1976.

A Frente Polisário foi criada depois de resoluções da Assembleia Geral das Nações Unidas a determinar, respetivamente, a descolonização do território (Resolução 1514, de 1960) e o direito do povo sarauí à autodeterminação (Resolução 2229, de 1966). No entanto, a potência colonial à época, Espanha, não só incumpriu com aquelas resoluções mas também deu azo à ocupação do Sara Ocidental pelo Reino de Marrocos, em 1975.

A Frente Polisário organizou a resistência armada ao invasor e a 27 de fevereiro de 1976 proclamou a RASD na parte libertada do seu território. Dois terços do Sara Ocidental continuam, no entanto, sob ocupação ilegal do Reino de Marrocos, apesar de este ter ficado obrigado pelo acordo de cessar-fogo de 1991 à realização de um referendo pela independência.

Marrocos tem exercido uma violenta repressão sobre as comunidades sarauís que habitam o território ocupado, e prossegue com a pilhagem dos recursos naturais do Sara Ocidental em proveito de empresas marroquinas e europeias, com a conivência dos EUA e da União Europeia, que ignora deliberações do Tribunal de Justiça Europeu a atestar que tais recursos pertencem ao povo sarauí e não podem ser utilizados sem o seu consentimento.

Mantendo-se fiel à sua solidariedade de sempre com a luta do povo sarauí e da Frente Polisário pela realização das suas legítimas e justas aspirações, o CPPC reclama o fim da repressão sobre o povo sarauí e da ilegal ocupação dos territórios do Sara Ocidental pelo Reino de Marrocos; o respeito pelo direito do povo sarauí à autodeterminação; e a libertação dos presos políticos sarauis detidos nas cadeias marroquinas.

Das autoridades portuguesas, exige-se a adoção de uma política que promova a concretização dos direitos nacionais daquele povo, em consonância com o artigo 7.º da Constituição da República Portuguesa.
