The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation strongly condemns the violence exercised in recent days by the Israeli army, police and settlers against Palestinians in East Jerusalem and other territories of occupied Palestine, with the eviction of populations from their homes in Sheik Jarrah and, right in the middle of Ramadan, the obstruction of access to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, considered the third most important site of the Islamic religion located in the heart of the Holy City of Jerusalem.

Far from being an unprecedented or isolated case, this is the hard daily life of a people who have lived for decades under an illegal occupation of their territory and subject to all kinds of arbitrariness, from the outset the intention of expelling Palestinian residents from East Jerusalem, which Israel intends to annex and establish its capital there, in clear confrontation with successive United Nations resolutions. Trump's previous U.S. administration covered the Israeli government's goal of illegally and provocatively proclaiming Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a position that the Biden administration has not reversed.

Since 1947, more than 130,000 Palestinian homes have been demolished in Israel and in the occupied Palestinian territories, and in 2020 alone, 865 buildings were demolished and more than 1000 Palestinians evicted from their homes. Together with the occupation and repression, the wall of separation, the military checkpoints and Israeli settlements, the expulsions of the Palestinian populations constitute a brutal violation of human rights and international law.

Blaming the Israeli Government and its xenophobic and colonialist policy for the violence that has fallen on the Palestinian populations these days, the CPPC denounces the impunity enjoyed by the State of Israel, an instrument of the US policy of aggression and destabilisation in the Middle East.

The Portuguese Government, which currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, should ensure a firm and consistent attitude according to the principles inscribed in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and in the United Nations Charter, in defence of the legitimate national rights of the Palestinian people consecrated in international law, including in numerous United Nations resolutions.

Demanding an immediate end to violence and to the expulsion of Palestinian populations and ensure free access for Muslim and Christian Palestinians to their places of worship, the CPPC also demands:

· The end of the bombings and the lifting of the criminal siege on Gaza.

· The release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons, many of whom are minors.

· The dismantling of settlements and the wall of separation.

· The end of the occupation and the creation of the State of Palestine on the borders prior to June 1967, with capital in East Jerusalem, ensuring the right of return of the refugees.

This is the path that serves peace and stability in Palestine and in the Middle East and respects the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people. It is for this that the CPPC has been fighting for decades and will continue to do so until it becomes a reality.

Contra a violência e a ocupação!

Pelos direitos nacionais do povo da Palestina!

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação condena firmemente a violência exercida nos últimos dias pelo exército, polícia e colonos israelitas contra palestinos em Jerusalém Oriental e noutros territórios da Palestina ocupada, com a expulsão de populações das suas habitações em Sheik Jarrah e, em pleno Ramadão, o impedimento de acesso à mesquita de Al-Aqsa, considerada como o terceiro local mais importante da religião islâmica situado no coração da Cidade Santa de Jerusalém.

Longe de ser um caso inédito ou isolado, este é o duro quotidiano de um povo que vive há décadas sob uma ocupação ilegal do seu território e sujeito a todo o tipo de arbitrariedades, desde logo a intenção de expulsar residentes palestinos de Jerusalém Oriental, que Israel pretende anexar para aí instalar a sua capital, em claro confronto com sucessivas resoluções das Nações Unidas. A anterior administração dos EUA, de Trump, deu cobertura ao objetivo do Governo israelita de proclamar, de forma ilegal e provocatória, Jerusalém como capital de Israel, posição que a administração Biden não reverteu.

Desde 1947, mais de 130 mil casas palestinas foram demolidas em Israel e nos territórios palestinos ocupados, e só em 2020 foram demolidos 865 edifícios e mais de 1000 palestinos foram expulsos das suas casas. Aliadas à ocupação e à repressão, ao muro de separação, aos postos de controlo militares e aos colonatos israelitas, as expulsões das populações palestinas constituem uma brutal violação dos direitos humanos e do direito internacional.

Responsabilizando o Governo israelita e a sua política xenófoba e colonialista pela violência que por estes dias se abate sobre as populações palestinas, o CPPC denuncia a impunidade de que goza o Estado de Israel, instrumento da política de agressão e desestabilização dos Estados Unidos da América no Médio Oriente.

Do Governo português, que neste momento assume a presidência do Conselho da União Europeia, exige-se uma atitude firme e coerente com os princípios inscritos na Constituição da República Portuguesa e na Carta das Nações Unidas, em defesa dos legítimos direitos nacionais do povo palestino consagrados no Direito Internacional, incluindo em inúmeras resoluções das Nações Unidas.

Exigindo o fim imediato da violência e da expulsão de populações palestinas e o livre acesso dos palestinos muçulmanos e cristãos aos seus lugares de culto, o CPPC reclama igualmente:

· o fim dos bombardeamentos e o levantamento do criminoso cerco a Gaza;

· a libertação dos milhares de presos palestinos nas prisões de Israel, muitos dos quais menores;

· o desmantelamento dos colonatos e do muro de separação;

· o fim da ocupação e a criação do Estado da Palestina nas fronteiras anteriores a Junho de 1967, com capital em Jerusalém Oriental, assegurando o direito de regresso dos refugiados.

Este é o caminho que serve a paz e a estabilidade na Palestina e no Médio Oriente e respeita os inalienáveis direitos nacionais do povo palestino. É por ele que o CPPC se bate desde há décadas e assim continuará até que seja uma realidade.
