On the day that marks 76 years since the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and lands by Israeli militias and army in 1948 – at the time of the founding of the State of Israel –, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) denounces, condemns and demands an immediate end to the genocide perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and reaffirms its solidarity with the struggle of the Palestinian people for the implementation of their inalienable and legitimate national rights.
This dramatic event, which Palestinians refer to as the day of the “Nakba”, that is, the “Catastrophe”, marks the beginning of the forced exodus of the Palestinian people, expelled from their homes and lands in historic Palestine.
These are 76 years of occupation and colonisation, destruction of entire towns, murders, arbitrary arrests – including of minors –, exploitation and segregation, daily humiliation, illegalities, violence, crimes and violations of international law, committed by the State of Israel against the Palestinian people.
On this date, we also do not forget what led us to the situation we are faced with: the expansion of the policy of occupation, oppression and provocation carried out by Netanyahu's far-right government and the action of Israeli settlers, which worsened the situation and led to the increased confrontation and violence in Israel, in the occupied Palestinian territories and in the Middle East.
In an authentic horror in the Gaza Strip that words cannot describe, Israel killed more than 35,000 and injured another 79,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women, in addition to the many thousands of people missing under indiscriminate Israeli bombings. Infrastructure, including housing, is practically reduced to rubble in the Gaza Strip. More than half of the population – around 1.7 million of the 2.3 million inhabitants – are homeless. In addition to the continuous bombings of hospitals, ambulances, schools, UN agency headquarters or places of religious worship, the murder of employees of humanitarian aid organisations and journalists, there is also the blockade of access to humanitarian aid, including medicines and fuel to the Gaza Strip and the use of hunger as a weapon of war, depriving the Palestinian population of water and food.
This has only been possible due to the complicity and support of the United States of America and other NATO and European Union powers. Assuming themselves, in fact, as protectors of the State of Israel and its actions, these powers have sought to repress and silence those who show solidarity with the Palestinian people and denounce and demand an end to their genocide.
The CPPC will remain solidary with the struggle of the Palestinian people, founded on the principles of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, the United Nations Charter and international law.
On the 76th. anniversary of the Day of the Catastrophe for the Palestinian people, the CPPC will not let the Palestinian cause be forgotten and urges all democrats to remain solidary with them. Demanding effective actions in favour of the inalienable national rights of the Palestinian people, the creation of the State of Palestine, of peace in the Middle East, in accordance with the applicable resolutions of the United Nations.

Nos 76 anos da Nakba
– Pôr fim ao genocídio! Liberdade para a Palestina!

No dia em que se perfazem 76 anos sobre a expulsão de centenas de milhar de palestinianos das suas casas e terras pelas milícias e exército israelitas em 1948 – aquando da fundação do Estado de Israel –, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) denuncia, condena e exige o fim imediato do genocídio perpetrado por Israel contra a população palestiniana na Faixa de Gaza e reafirma a sua solidariedade com a luta do povo palestiniano pela concretização dos seus inalienáveis e legítimos direitos nacionais.
Este dramático acontecimento, que os palestinianos designam como o dia da «Nakba», ou seja, da «Catástrofe», marca o início do êxodo forçado do povo palestiniano, expulso das suas casas e terras na Palestina histórica.
São 76 anos de ocupação e colonização, de destruição de povoações inteiras, de assassinatos, de prisões arbitrárias – incluindo de menores de idade –, de exploração e segregação, de humilhações diárias, de ilegalidades, de violências, de crimes e de violações do direito internacional, cometidos pelo Estado de Israel contra o povo palestiniano.
Nesta data, não esquecemos também o que nos conduziu à situação com que nos confrontamos: a intensificação da política de ocupação, opressão e provocação conduzida pelo governo de extrema-direita de Netanyahu e pela acção de colonos israelitas, que agravou a situação e conduziu ao incremento da confrontação e da violência em Israel, nos territórios palestinianos ocupados e no Médio Oriente.
Num autêntico horror na Faixa de Gaza que as palavras não conseguem descrever, Israel matou mais de 35 mil e feriu mais 79 mil palestinianos, na sua maioria crianças e mulheres, para além dos muitos milhares de desaparecidos sob os indiscriminados bombardeamentos israelitas. As infraestruturas, incluindo de habitação, estão praticamente reduzidas a escombros na Faixa de Gaza. Mais de metade da população – cerca de 1,7 milhões dos 2,3 milhões de habitantes – estão desalojadas. Aos contínuos bombardeamentos a hospitais, ambulâncias, escolas, sedes de agências da ONU ou locais de culto religioso, ao assassinato de funcionários de organizações de ajuda humanitária e de jornalistas, soma-se o bloqueio do acesso da ajuda humanitária, incluindo de medicamentos e combustíveis, à Faixa de Gaza e a utilização da fome como arma de guerra, privando a população palestiniana de água e alimentação.
Tal tem sido possível pela cumplicidade e apoio dos Estados Unidos da América e de outras potências da NATO e da União Europeia. Assumindo-se, de facto, como protectoras do Estado de Israel e das suas acções, estas potências têm procurado reprimir e silenciar quem se solidariza com o povo palestiniano e denuncia e exige o fim do seu genocídio.
O CPPC continuará solidário com a luta do povo palestiniano, fundado nos princípios da Constituição da República Portuguesa, da Carta das Nações Unidas e do direito internacional.
Nos 76 anos do dia da Catástrofe para o povo palestiniano, o CPPC não deixará que a causa palestiniana seja esquecida e exorta os democratas a manterem-se solidários com a mesma. A reclamarem acções efectivas a favor dos inalienáveis direitos nacionais do povo palestiniano, da criação do Estado da Palestina, da paz no Médio Oriente, de acordo com as resoluções aplicáveis da Organização das Nações Unidas.
