On April 24, 1976, a few days after the enactment of the Constitution of the Portuguese
Republic, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) was formally
constituted, heir and continuator of the peace movement that emerged in the fifties of the 20 th .
century, faced the repression of the fascist regime and fought courageously against war,
namely the colonial war, to defend peace, disarmament, solidarity and cooperation among the
peoples of the world.

Both the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and the CPPC are children of the April
Revolution, a process resulting from the struggle of the Portuguese people, and its
transformations in the construction of a new democratic Portugal, with profound changes in
the social, cultural, political and economic fields.

The bond between the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic and the CPPC is not limited to
the year of its formalisation, being deeper due to what was enshrined in Article 7 of the
Constitution, namely with regard to the everlasting causes of the peace movement: general
disarmament, simultaneous and controlled, dissolution of political-military blocs, respect for
the sovereignty of peoples, non-interference, rejection of imperialism, colonialism and any
other form of aggression. Before and after its formalisation, these are some of the values that
guide the action of the CPPC, which, nowadays, are still topical, and their defence and
respect are fundamental and urgent.

In the times of uncertainty that we live in, this path pointed by the Constitution of the
Portuguese Republic is the only one that serves the interests of the Portuguese people,
because it is the path that condemns wars and defends peace, solidarity, friendship,
cooperation, security in Europe and in the world. The policies of the various Portuguese
governments were not always in line with the values enshrined in the Constitution of the
Portuguese Republic in relation to the country's international relations, which is why the
demand that the CPPC, in convergence with other Portuguese organisations and
personalities, has made, for its compliance.

At the time when we are approaching the commemorations of the 50 th . anniversary of the 25 th .
of April, of the Revolution that enshrined the right of peoples to live in peace, the determined
action of the CPPC in favour of peace and solidarity, based on the principles that have always
guided its activity, continues to be necessary.

With confidence in the correctness of these same principles, we reaffirm our everlasting
commitment to always act side by side with all those who, in Portugal and in the world,
intervene with the aspiration and conviction that it is possible to have a fair, democratic,
solidary, fraternal world, of peace.

It is also in this context that we are holding concerts, debates, exhibitions, initiatives in
schools and on the streets for Peace, solidarity actions with people who are victims of
aggression and war, and together with other organisations, we are preparing the III Meeting
for Peace, to be held on October 28, in Vila Nova de Gaia, with the motto «On the 50 th .
anniversary of April, for Peace we all are not too many! ».

Everyone's contribution is essential to this fight and to build peace!

Nos 47 anos do CPPC
- continuar a luta em defesa da Paz

No dia 24 de Abril de 1976, poucos dias depois da promulgação da Constituição da República Portuguesa (CRP), foi formalmente constituído o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC), herdeiro e continuador do movimento da paz surgido na década de 50 do século XX, que enfrentou a repressão do regime fascista e se bateu corajosamente contra a guerra, nomeadamente a guerra colonial, em prol da paz, do desarmamento, da solidariedade e da cooperação entre os povos do mundo.

Quer a Constituição da República Portuguesa, quer o CPPC, são filhos da Revolução de Abril, processo resultante da luta do povo português, e das suas transformações na construção de um novo Portugal democrático, com profundas alterações a nível social, cultural, político e económico.

A ligação entre a Constituição da República Portuguesa e o CPPC não se limita ao ano da sua formalização, sendo mais profunda pelo que ficou consagrado no artigo 7º da Constituição, nomeadamente no que respeita às causas de sempre do movimento da paz: o desarmamento geral, simultâneo e controlado, a dissolução dos blocos político-militares, o respeito pela soberania dos povos, a não ingerência, a rejeição do imperialismo, do colonialismo e de qualquer outra forma de agressão. Antes e após a sua formalização, estes são alguns dos valores que norteiam a ação do CPPC, que, nos dias que correm, mantêm toda a sua atualidade, sendo fundamental e urgente a sua defesa e respeito.

Nos tempos de incerteza que vivemos, este caminho apontado pela Constituição da República Portuguesa é o único que serve os interesses do povo português, porque é o caminho que condena as guerras e que defende a paz, a solidariedade, a amizade, a cooperação, a segurança na Europa e no mundo. Nem sempre as políticas dos vários governos portugueses foram consentâneas com os valores consagrados na Constituição da República Portuguesa relativamente às relações internacionais do País, sendo por isso, também, fundamental a exigência que o CPPC, em convergência com outras organizações e personalidades portugueses, têm feito, para o seu cumprimento.

Num momento em que nos aproximamos das comemorações dos 50 anos do 25 de Abril, da Revolução que consagrou o direito dos povos a viver em paz, a ação determinada do CPPC em prol da paz e da solidariedade, com base nos princípios que desde sempre norteiam a sua atividade, continua a ser necessária.

Com confiança na justeza destes mesmos princípios, reafirmamos o nosso compromisso de sempre de agir lado a lado com todos os quantos, em Portugal e no mundo, intervêm com a aspiração e convicção de que é possível um mundo justo, democrático, solidário, fraterno, de paz.

É também nesse contexto que estamos a realizar concertos, debates, exposições, iniciativas em escolas e na rua pela Paz, ações de solidariedade com os povos vítimas de agressões e guerras, e que, em conjunto com outras organizações, estamos a preparar o III Encontro pela Paz, a realizar em 28 de Outubro, em Vila Nova de Gaia, com o lema «Nos 50 anos de Abril, pela Paz, todos não somos demais!».

É fundamental o contributo de todos para esta luta e para a construção da paz!
