The 45th anniversary of the Constitution of Peace

Monday, April 26, 2021

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) welcomes the 45th anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic (CPR), approved and promulgated on April 2, 1976, which enshrined broad democratic rights - political, social, economic and cultural - achieved by the Portuguese people with the April Revolution, which began on April 25, 1974, and put an end to fascism and colonialism, pointing, in particular, to a new direction for Portugal's foreign relations based on respect for national sovereignty and independence, on a policy of peace, friendship and cooperation with all the peoples of the world, expressing the sovereign will of the Portuguese people to assume their own destiny, without foreign interference.

Reaffirming its commitment to the emancipatory path pointed out by the Constitution of April, the CPPC continues its determined action to uphold international peace, security and cooperation, friendship, cooperation and solidarity among peoples and takes as its own the causes of the dissolution of political-military blocs, the end of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction and foreign military bases, respect for the sovereignty and independence of States and the right of the peoples to define their own destiny.

In complex and very unpredictable times, when the pandemic that affects the entire planet does not diminish the persisting threats and dangers for Peace, where social responsibility cannot be confused with a climate of fear, which can lead to its trivialisation and to conditions conducive to the amputation of fundamental rights, freedoms and guarantees, weakening democracy and creating added difficulties for social progress and peace, the CPPC trusts in the correctness of its principles, in the principles enshrined in the Portuguese Constitution, and reaffirms its commitment to always act side by side with all those who, in Portugal and in the world, intervene with the aspiration and conviction that a just, solidary and peaceful world is possible.

The CPPC is celebrating the 45th. anniversary of the CPR in several ways, calling for the participation of the friends of Peace, namely in joint initiatives with other organisations, institutions and artists, as is the case of the political-cultural initiative that will take place on April 20, in Porto; with artists, through the exhibition “Peace and Constitution”, which includes works by more than 60 artists, and will be part of the IV International Biennial of Art of Gaia, to take place between April 17 and July 10; with the Meeting for Peace, to be held on June 5, in Setúbal, in a reaffirmation of the constitutionally consecrated April values, in defence of a fairer and peaceful world of social progress.
