Friday, August 5, 2022

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), one of the member organisations of the Platform for Peace and Disarmament, was present at the Camp for Peace, which took place in the Municipal Swimming Pools of Évora, between July 29 and 31.
With the participation of hundreds of young people from all over the country, the three days of the camp were a strong affirmation of the young people's desire for a world of Peace, denouncing war, blockades and sanctions and their consequences. With activities that filled the days, from arts - with the painting of a mural and a poster workshop - to sports - with tournaments of various activities, to debates "Wars, Sanctions and Blockades – The Losers
are the Peoples" and "Trafficking of Human Beings – Breaking the Silence” – the Municipal Swimming Pools of Évora and the city itself were filled with the meaning of Peace.

The Camp parade, on Saturday, following a hearty dinner at Monte Alentejano and the words of Pedro Costa, from Évora City Council, who mentioned the importance of this Camp, the defence of peace and the active engagement of young people on these issues, was the highlight of the Camp, along which, from Rossio to the Public Garden, people shouted “Yes to Peace! No to War!” “The cost of living goes up: the youth have had enough!”
and “Millions for war, only pennies for the people!”.

On the last day of the Camp, the CPPC participated in the debate “Wars, Sanctions and Blockades – The Losers are the Peoples,” which also included the participation of Domingos Pereira, AEFCSH (Students Union of the Social and Human Sciences Faculty) and Yusmarí Diaz, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Portugal. In an informal conversation, as the atmosphere called for, but which was nevertheless profitable and enlightening, the CPPC spoke briefly about the emergence of the Peace movement in the World and in Portugal, about its origins, focusing on the work it has carried out and continues to carry out for the defence of Peace, with special emphasis on initiatives and solidarity work with the peoples of the world, denouncing external interference and attempts to destabilise and prevent the materialisation of the sovereignty of States.
