The nuclear power plant in Akkuyu endangers the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East

Thursday, April 5, 2018

The Cyprus Peace Council expresses its deep concern at the start of the work for the construction of the nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, Turkey. The nuclear power station in Akkuyu will be built with the cooperation of Russia and Turkey, and is located just a few kilometers north of Cyprus.

The construction of a plant generating electricity power through nuclear power harbors dangers to the peoples of the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. The operation of the nuclear power plant creates serious concerns for safety, health and the environment, given that large amounts of radioactive-nuclear waste will be created. A nuclear accident will have devastating consequences for life, the environment and health. The nuclear accidents in Chernobyl and Fukushima remind us all of the devastating consequences for humanity.

The Cyprus Peace Council calls on Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, as well as the peoples of the region, to raise their voices against the construction of a nuclear plant in Akkuyu and to demand the cancellation of the plans to use nuclear energy and the removal of all nuclear weapons.
