Around 800 people, including representatives from around 100 organisations, coming from
North to South of mainland Portugal, headed to Vila Nova de Gaia to participate in what was
a great Meeting for Peace.
With the situation in Palestine rightly concentrating much of the attention (the Palestinian
scarves worn by the participants were by the dozens), it reaffirmed the urgency of putting an
immediate end to the massacre that Israel is carrying out in the Gaza Strip, stopping the
invasion by land, and allowing the entry of humanitarian aid. It was also highlighted that
peace in Palestine - as throughout the world - is only possible if it is fair and takes into
account the rights of the people, especially the Palestinian people.
In the declarations made in the three thematic panels - Peace and disarmament, Culture and
Education for Peace, Solidarity and Cooperation - there was talk of the need to move towards
disarmament, reversing the trend of growing militarisation and huge increase in military
expenditure, of putting an end to the escalation of tension and the politics of confrontation that
mark our times: in the Middle East, in Eastern Europe, in Asia-Pacific, in Africa. It also
demanded the end of blockades and unilateral sanctions imposed by the USA and its allies
on several countries around the world and highlighted the need to increase solidarity with the
people of the world who fight for their sovereignty and development.
When marking 50 years of the April Revolution, it was reminded that this liberating act put an
end to a war and directed Portugal towards a path of peace and cooperation with all peoples.
The principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, namely in its article
7, must guide the country's foreign policy, which has not happened. Increasing action, adding
aspirations for peace was a commitment made by everyone who was there and who, as Ilda
Figueiredo mentioned, represent many others.

Encontro pela Paz - Outubro 2023, Vila Nova de Gaia

Cerca de 800 pessoas, incluindo representantes de cerca de 100 organizações, vindas de Norte a Sul de Portugal continental, rumaram a Vila Nova de Gaia para participar naquele que foi um grande Encontro pela Paz.
Com a situação na Palestina a concentrar justamente muitas das atenções (contavam-se às dezenas os lenços palestinianos usados pelos participantes), reafirmou-se a urgência de pôr um fim imediato ao massacre que Israel leva a cabo na Faixa de Gaza, travar a invasão terrestre e permitir a entrada de ajuda humanitária. Foi ainda salientado que a paz na Palestina - como em todo o mundo - só é possível se for justa e levar em conta os direitos dos povos, desde logo do povo palestiniano.
Nas intervenções proferidas nos três painéis temáticos - Paz e desarmamento; Cultura e Educação para a Paz, Solidariedade e Cooperação - falou-se da necessidade de avançar no desarmamento, invertendo a tendência de crescente militarização e de aumento exponencial das despesas militares, de pôr fim à escalada de tensão e à política de confrontação que marcam o nosso tempo: no Médio Oriente, no Leste da Europa, na Ásia-Pacífico, em África. Exigiu-se o fim dos bloqueios e sanções unilaterais, impostos pelos EUA e seus aliados a vários países do mundo e sublinhou-se a necessidade de elevar a solidariedade aos povos do mundo que lutam pela sua soberania e pelo seu desenvolvimento.
Quando se assinala 50 anos da Revolução de Abril lembrou-se que esse ato libertador pôr fim a uma guerra e apontou Portugal a um rumo de paz e cooperação com todos os povos. Os princípios inscritos na Constituição da República Portuguesa, designadamente no seu artigo 7.º, devem nortear a política externa do País, o que não tem acontecido. Elevar a ação, somar vontades pela paz foi um compromisso assumido por todos os que ali estiveram - que, como referiu Ilda Figueiredo, representam muitos outros.
