Freedom for diplomat Alex Saab

Wednesday, January 4, 2023

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation expresses its concern over the illegal detention of diplomat Alex Saab, special envoy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, which has lasted more than two years.

In 2020, in a context in which the pandemic further aggravated the lives of peoples and countries we are witnessing illegal and inhuman blockades and economic sanctions imposed by the US, as is the case of Venezuela. Alex Saab was on a
diplomatic mission aimed at ensuring the supply of food and medical equipment to the Venezuelan people, having been illegally detained in Cape Verde at the request of the US authorities, where he ended up by being transferred in October 2021,
and where he remains jailed.

The illegal and unilateral sanctions imposed by the US on Venezuela openly violate the United Nations Charter and international law and represent a brutal act against the Venezuelan people that must be denounced. This detention, which is also illegal
under international law – as it violates Alex Saab's diplomatic immunity status – is also part of a broader action of destabilisation and interference carried out by the US against Venezuela.

Between December 12 and 16, there is a hearing on the status of diplomatic immunity – enshrined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations – of Alex Saab, a status that the US deliberately disrespects.

The CPPC joins the demand for freedom for the Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab and expresses its solidarity with the Venezuelan people, reaffirming that all peoples have the right to pursue the paths they sovereignly decide to follow, without any kind
of external interference. It is respect for this principle in international relations that best serves peace, progress and development.
