The 15th of May marks 72 years since the Nakba, an Arabic term for the massive expulsion of the Palestinian population when the State of Israel was created, on the 15th of May 1948. This term, whose translation into English is Catastrophe, contains suffering of a people expelled from their land, deprived of their country and subject to all kinds of violence - from arbitrary arrests to murders, from massacres to humiliating segregation.

Marking this date is particularly important when the current Israeli government announced plans to, already on July 1, proceed with a new annexation of Palestinian territories.

On this occasion, the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) renews its ever-present solidarity with the Palestinian people and its heroic struggle for its legitimate national rights, namely the creation of an independent, sovereign and viable state on the borders prior to June 1967, with its capital in East Jerusalem, and the right of refugees to return.

While reaffirming its demand that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories cease, with the dismantling of all settlements, checkpoints and the wall of segregation, the lifting of the siege on Gaza, CPPC reaffirms the demand for the release of Palestinian political prisoners imprisoned in Israeli jails, many of whom are minors.

The plight of the Palestinians is due to the illegal Zionist occupation of their territory and the international support of the United States of America, militarily and economically support and political and diplomatic coverage to Israel and its crimes. The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and the Trump plan, the so called 'Agreement of the Century', which in practice makes it impossible to create the State of Palestine, are the more recent episodes of a long partnership.

The Portuguese Government must unequivocaly condemn the Israeli occupation and have a clear action in favour of the rights of the Palestinian people and must recognise the Palestinian state, as moreover recommended by the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic. The first commitment of any Portuguese government is to the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, which in its article 7 rejects any and all forms of "aggression, domination and exploitation in relations between peoples".

In a time of sanitary emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the CPPC draws attention to the complaints of serious actions by Israel against the Palestinian people, such as the theft of health protection equipment, acts commited by the Israeli military against Palestinian citizens that endager their health and the dramatic situation in Gaza, deprived of essential goods and services due to the blockade of the region.

Remenbering Nakba, the CPPC reaffirms that it will continue its actions in favour of the just struggle of the Palestinian people for their national cause, certain that sooner than later, the Palestinian people will be victorious.

Assinalam-se a 15 de Maio 72 anos da Nakba, termo árabe para designar a expulsão massiva da população palestina aquando da criação do Estado de Israel, a 15 de Maio de 1948. Este termo, cuja tradução para português será Catástrofe, contém o sofrimento de um povo expulso da sua terra, privado do seu país e sujeito a todo o tipo de violência – de prisões arbitrárias a assassinatos, de massacres à humilhante segregação.

Assinalar esta data é particularmente importante quando o atual governo israelita anunciou planos para, já no dia 1 de Julho, proceder a uma nova anexação de territórios palestinos.

Nesta ocasião, o Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) renova a sua solidariedade de sempre ao povo palestino e à sua heróica luta pelos seus legítimos direitos nacionais, nomeadamente a criação do seu Estado independente, soberano e viável nas fronteiras anteriores a Junho de 1967, com capital em Jerusalém Oriental, e o direito ao regresso dos refugiados.

Ao mesmo tempo que reafirma a sua exigência de que cesse a ocupação israelita dos territórios palestinos, com o desmantelamento de todos os colonatos, postos de controlo e do muro de segregação, o levantamento do cerco a Gaza, o CPPC reafirma a exigência da libertação dos presos políticos palestinos encarcerados em prisões de Israel, muitos dos quais menores.

A grave situação dos palestinos deve-se à ilegal ocupação sionista do seu território e ao apoio internacional dos Estados Unidos da América, que suportam militar e economicamente Israel e dão cobertura política e diplomática aos seus crimes. O reconhecimento de Jerusalém como capital de Israel e o plano Trump, dito ‘Acordo do Século’, que na prática impossibilita a a criação do Estado da Palestina, são episódios mais recentes de uma longa cumplicidade.

Do Governo português exige-se a condenação inequívoca da ocupação israelita e uma ação clara em favor dos direitos do povo palestino e do reconhecimento do estado palestino, como aliás recomendado pela Assembleia da República. O primeiro compromisso de qualquer governo português é com a Constituição da República, que no seu artigo 7.º rejeita toda e qualquer forma de «agressão, domínio e exploração nas relações entre os povos».

Em tempo de emergência sanitária provocada pela pandemia de COVID-19, o CPPC chama a atenção para as denúncias de graves atitudes de Israel contra o povo palestino, como o roubo de equipamentos de proteção sanitária, os atos promovidos por militares israelitas contra cidadãos palestinos atentatórios da sua saúde e a dramática situação que se vive em Gaza, privada de bens e serviços essenciais devido ao bloqueio à região.

Lembrando a Nakba, o CPPC garante que prosseguirá a ação em prol da justa luta do povo palestino pela sua causa nacional, certo de que mais cedo do que tarde, dele será a vitória.
