CULTURE TO SERVE THE CAUSE OF PEACE

Wednesday, July 28, 2021

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) has paid special importance to the promotion of the culture of peace, seeking that the artistic creativity and generosity of its creators – artists from the most diverse areas – contribute to the common goal of defence and promotion of peace, mobilising very diverse sectors for the enjoyment and participation in cultural initiatives and in defence of peace.

Despite the limitations imposed by the epidemic situation in Portugal, including the constraints placed on the use of spaces for cultural enjoyment, the CPPC has been committed to carrying out cultural initiatives, from the north to the south of the country - ensuring adequate sanitary conditions -, in coordination with local government authorities, schools, associations and cooperatives, musicians, visual and performing arts artists, examples of which are the Concerts for Peace, visual arts exhibitions, conferences, among other cultural initiatives.

Noteworthy are the Concerts for Peace promoted by the CPPC with the support of various entities, two of which were held in 2020, in the cities of Porto and Viana do Castelo, and three in 2021, in the cities of Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Évora.

The Concerts for Peace, which are already being held annually in some Portuguese cities for the past eight years, took place even in this troubled period – ensuring adequate sanitary conditions – with the support of local government authorities and the solidarity participation of artists, art schools, music, theatre and dance groups.

Generally, each Concert for Peace takes a few months to program, organise and prepare, in a solidary work that involves many dozens of people, including teachers and students from art schools, artists and associations, workers and technicians from local government authorities.

A Concert for Peace is a meeting of wills and creativity, the involvement of hundreds of people in a generous and committed contribution to creating art in defence of peace, which thousands of people enjoy in shows, in which also, in general, they are invited to intervene, chanting “Yes to Peace! No to war!”, in an affirmation of the values of peace and the demand for a world free from aggressions against peoples.

Also worth mentioning are the visual arts exhibitions in support of the cause of peace, which the CPPC promotes with the support of various entities and which involved more than 100 artists, and which took place in Viana do Castelo, Vila Nova de Gaia and the Algarve.

To mark the 45th. anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, which enshrines important principles in defence of peace, sovereignty and the rights of peoples and cooperation, the exhibition “Peace and Constitution” was on display in Vila Nova de Gaia at the 4th. Gaia 2021International Biennial of Art, with the participation of 62 artists from different parts of the country, who generously agreed to place their creativity at the service of peace. A conference on “Peace and Constitution” was also held, with the participation of artists, journalists, poets and teachers – as had happened previously in the city of Porto, when the CPPC celebrated the 45th. anniversary of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, in collaboration with many other organisations.

In the Algarve, various cultural initiatives were organised involving visual artists and musical groups, including an exhibition of visual arts for nuclear disarmament, which toured several municipalities in this region, and which was carried out in collaboration with an association of artists.

Culture to serve the cause of peace also had an important expression in the Meeting for Peace, held in Portugal on June 5th., in the city of Setúbal.

The Meeting held a debate dedicated to the theme of culture and education for peace, where the importance of culture and education for peace was underlined, namely by schools, with debates, lectures, exhibitions and works carried out by students, with the support of teachers and student associations, in the field of visual arts, poetry and music – an area of intervention in which the CPPC has also been involved.

In fact, the Meeting for Peace ended with a cultural moment, with the participation of a young group of artists, which involved music, dance and performing arts on stage, where an hour before these artistic and cultural aspects had been underlined due to the important role they can play in promoting and defending Peace.

The CPPC continues to schedule new Concerts for Peace, more debates and conferences, new exhibitions, promoting culture and education for peace, in a broad united work with artists, schools, local government authorities and associations, affirming the role of culture in defending peace and solidarity among peoples.
