Statement of WPC demanding the release of Peace fighter Margaretta D'Arcy in Ireland

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

The World Peace Council (WPC) expresses its firm protest and denounces the arrest of Margaretta D'Arcy, an Irish Peace activist who has become known from her militant participation in actions against the use of the Irish Shannon airport by US and NATO air planes in their crimes and aggressions against many countries and peoples in recent years.

Margaretta D'Arcy, 79 years old and a committed fighter for peace, participated in symbolical initiatives of the Irish peace Movement and of our Member organisation PANA Ireland, was therefore arrested and tried. The Irish authorities "offered" her to go free,if she would sign and commit herself to refrain from similar actions in the future, a provocation which Margaretta D'Arcy rejected, choosing to go to serve here 3-months sentence in prison.

The case of Margaretta D'Arcy brings up again the case of the imperialist policies of USA, EU and NATO within their growing aggressiveness against the peoples of the world as well the use and abuse of military bases and airports in various parts of the world.

The WPC underlines the responsibilities of the Irish government in its support to these actions and demands the immediate release of Margaretta D'Arcy. We express our solidarity to Margaretta D'Arcy and join our voices and efforts with PANA Ireland. We call upon members and friends of the WPC to raise the matter and take position.

End the use of Shannon airport by the USA and NATO!
Stop the miltary operations form Shannon!
