Socorro Gomes: For the consolidation of a sovereign and fraternal peace in the Korean Peninsula

Saturday, April 28, 2018

It is with great satisfaction and hope that the anti-imperialist and peace forces celebrate the most recent event in the rapprochement between the Korean leaders, the Inter-Korean Summit Meeting in the House of Peace, in Panmunjom, on the 27th of April, which resulted in a consistent and auspicious commitment.

“There will be no more war on the Korean Peninsula and thus a new era of peace has begun”, the meeting’s bilateral declaration states. It is evident that the Korean people yearn for peace, shared prosperity and unity.

The moment is of great expectations and reflects the Korean leaders’ commitment with overcoming six decades of conflict and separation. It also brings the more immediate and urgent hope of nuclear disarmament to the region, a commitment already expressed by the leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jong Un.

The People’s Korea has exercised its right to defend its sovereignty against the interferences, the threats, the aggressive propaganda and the offensive policy of isolation and strangulation of its economy, a policy effected through recurring war drills, daily inflammatory statements and systematic sanctions. The imperialist powers that promote such a policy have bet, for decades, on the destabilization and threat of war.

The World Peace Council has repeatedly expressed its solidarity with the Korean people in search for rapprochement between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea, free from foreign meddling. It has also expressed its support to the efforts for peace in the region, for stability and for the end of the threats of war.

Long live the fraternity among the peoples and the struggle for peace!

For the end of war and division in Korea, the Korean people’s expressed will!

Socorro Gomes

President of the World Peace Council
