The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC) salutes the 48th. anniversary of the April Revolution, one of the most notable events in the history of Portugal.

On this date, we honour the April soldiers and all the men and women who fought against the dictatorship in factories, fields and schools, paving the way for the revolution, which made it possible to respond to the just aspirations of our people who for decades longed for a society of freedom, justice, progress, fraternity and peace.

The April Revolution was a break with the fascist regime, determined by the action of the MFA soldiers, which was followed by the action of the popular masses, with profound changes that eliminated the socio-economic structure on which the fascist dictatorship was based.

With April it was possible to improve the living conditions of the Portuguese people, change the situation of marginalisation of political life in which workers, youth, women and the people in general lived, and put an end to 13 years of the criminal colonial war.

Celebrating April means affirming democracy and freedom and ensuring that they are an integral and inalienable feature of Portuguese society.

Celebrating April is fighting for an economic, social and cultural democracy based on the subordination of the economic power to the democratic political power.

Celebrating April is defending and consolidating the social advances achieved, the universal and solidary public social security, the national health service, the democratic and quality public school, the democratic local administration, pillars of the democratic State enshrined in the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

Among the many thousands of Portuguese who fought for 48 years against the fascist dictatorship, facing persecution, imprisonment, torture or exile, were many defenders of peace who raised high the flags against the colonial wars which sacrificed generations of young Portuguese, who carried out actions of solidarity with the peoples subjected to colonialism, who fought for disarmament and for the dissolution of NATO

The escalation of tension and warmongering rhetoric, the arms race, the proliferation of military bases in foreign territory, the continuous interference and blackmail on sovereign countries, the encouragement of wars of aggression are practices that increasingly put peace and international security at risk.

Therefore, the CPPC considers it essential to defend the principles of the United Nations Charter, International Law and the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, contributing to the fulfilment of the April values, namely by recognising the right of peoples to Peace, thus joining the popular celebrations of the 25th. of April.

A Paz é um dos maiores valores de Abril

O Conselho Português para a Paz e Cooperação (CPPC) saúda o 48.º aniversário da Revolução de Abril, um dos mais importantes acontecimentos da história de Portugal.

Nesta data, homenageamos os militares de Abril e todos os homens e mulheres que nas fábricas, nos campos e nas escolas lutaram contra a ditadura, abrindo caminho à revolução, que permitiu dar resposta às justas aspirações do nosso povo que ansiava, há décadas, por uma sociedade de liberdade, justiça, progresso, fraternidade e paz.

A Revolução de Abril foi uma rutura com o regime fascista, determinada pela ação dos militares do MFA a que se seguiu a ação das massas populares, com profundas transformações que eliminaram a estrutura socioeconómica em que assentava a ditadura fascista.

Com Abril foi possível melhorar as condições de vida do povo português, alterar a situação de marginalização da vida política em que viviam os trabalhadores, a juventude, as mulheres e o povo em geral, e pôr fim aos criminosos 13 anos de guerra colonial.

Comemorar Abril é afirmar a democracia e a liberdade e garantir que sejam um elemento integrante e inalienável da sociedade portuguesa.

Comemorar Abril é lutar por uma democracia económica, social e cultural baseada na subordinação do poder económico ao poder político democrático.

Comemorar Abril é defender e consolidar os avanços sociais alcançados, a segurança social pública universal e solidária, o serviço nacional de saúde, a escola pública democrática e de qualidade, o poder local democrático, pilares do Estado democrático consagrados na Constituição da República Portuguesa.

Entre os muitos milhares de portugueses que lutaram durante 48 anos contra a ditadura fascista, enfrentando perseguições, prisões, torturas ou o exílio, estiveram muitos defensores da paz que levantaram bem alto as bandeiras contra as guerras coloniais que sacrificaram gerações de jovens portugueses, que desenvolveram ação solidária com os povos vítimas do colonialismo, que lutaram pelo desarmamento e pela dissolução da NATO.
O agravamento da tensão e retórica belicista, a corrida aos armamentos, a proliferação de bases militares em território estrangeiro, as contínuas ingerências e chantagens sobre países soberanos, o fomento de guerras de agressão são práticas que põem cada vez mais em risco a paz e a segurança internacionais.

Por isso, o CPPC considera fundamental defender os princípios da Carta das Nações Unidas, o Direito Internacional e a Constituição da República Portuguesa, contribuindo para que os valores de Abril sejam cumpridos, designadamente reconhecendo o direito dos povos à Paz, associando-se, assim, às comemorações populares do 25 de Abril.
