Initiative of solidarity with Cuba – June 23

Saturday, July 17, 2021

June 23 was one more day of affirmation of solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban people on the occasion of the vote on yet another resolution demanding the end of the criminal Blockade imposed on Cuba by the USA. Presented by Cuba since 1992 to the United Nations General Assembly, it has since been approved by a large majority, demonstrating the isolation of the Blockade and that Cuba, free and sovereign, is resisting.

The action of solidarity with Cuba brought together dozens of people in Lisbon who answered the call launched jointly by the Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation, the Portugal-Cuba Friendship Association (AAPC) and the Trade Union Confederation of Portuguese Workers (CGTP-IN).

APPEAL FOR SOLIDARITY WITH CUBA

On the coming June 23, Cuba presents a resolution in the General Assembly of the United Nations against the criminal blockade brought by the USA against Cuba.

The economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for more than six decades, constitutes the most unfair, severe and prolonged extraterritorial system of unilateral sanctions that has ever been applied to any country and is the main obstacle to the development of all the potential of the Cuban economy.

The blockade constitutes a blatant and systematic violation of the rights of the Cuban people and represents an illegal act under International Law and is an instrument of aggression, through which consecutive US governments have sought, for decades, to prevent the Cuban people from continuing freely the path that they have sovereignly chosen and repeatedly ratified for their country. A criminal blockade that the Trump government worsened and that the current Biden government maintains.

No citizen or sector of the Cuban economy escapes the consequences of this blockade.

The accumulated damages during these six decades amount to more than ONE BILLION NINETY-EIGHT THOUSAND MILLION DOLLARS.

It is urgent and only fair to lift the blockade of the US government, which violates human rights and international law.

All over the world, on this same day, more than 1,600 associations of friendship and solidarity with Cuba and other organisations from 150 countries, including Portugal, are promoting actions aimed at condemning this unspeakable blockade and demanding its end and it is up to the peoples with their action and struggle to denounce the aggressive policies of US imperialism.

The peoples have the right to choose their own path!
