For the freedom and sovereignty of the Saharawi People

Wednesday, December 21, 2022

The UN Security Council adopted, on October 27, a Resolution - S/RES/2654 - which, among other recommendations, renews the mandate of MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) until October 31, 2023, and calls for
the direct involvement of the UN Secretary General in the necessary negotiations.

The Portuguese Council for Peace and Cooperation (CPPC), which has been following this situation since its beginning, recalls that MINURSO, created in 1991, has as its main objective the promotion of a referendum for the self-determination of the Saharawi
People, which to date has had no development.
In response to the UN communiqué, the Polisario Front also warns of the inaction of the MINURSO mission and the continuing harassments and violations by the Kingdom of Morocco. But, once again, it remains available for the peaceful resolution of this conflict,
based on UN resolutions and International Law.

The CPPC defends that it will not be the announcement of an extension for another year of the mission that will solve the situation. Only the effective commitment of all parties, including Spain, and the necessary political will to respond to a
problem that has dragged on for almost five decades.
The CPPC salutes the Polisario Front, the legitimate representative of the Saharawi people, recognising its decisive role in the decades of resistance and intense struggle against colonialism, for the inalienable right of the Saharawi people to a free and
sovereign homeland in the territory that constitutes the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic , as defined by the Commission on Decolonisation of the United Nations and recognised by numerous countries and entities, and defends the urgent resolution
of this situation, putting an end to the occupation and colonialism in Western Sahara.
